A descriptive study of intentional self-poisoning from New Zealand national registry data.

CONCLUSIONS: The current format of MOH data indicates that developing interventions to help young people and those living in deprived areas may be useful. Finding specific solutions is challenging when only limited nationwide substance-specific poisoning information is available. Implications for public health: Including specific substances in national data collections is important for addressing the public health challenge of intentional overdose morbidity and mortality. We examined Emergency Medical Services (EMS) utilization among a cohort of individuals who died from opioid overdose in order to identify potential opportunities for intervention. Methods: Individuals who died of unintentional opioid overdose in a large North Carolina county between 01/01/2014 and 12/31/2016 were studied in a retrospective cohort. Death records obtained from North Carolina Vital Records were linked to EMS patient care records obtained from the county EMS System in order to describe the EMS encounters of each decedent in the year preceding their death. Patient demographics and EMS encounters were assessed t...

Conclusions: Fatal opioid overdose accounted for over half a million YLL in Ohio during the 7-year study period. Opioid overdose mortality rose annually. Fentanyl involved overdoses accounted for a growing proportion of excess mortality. Burden was not equally distributed within the state. Two distinct geographical clusters of excess mortality were identified in the northeast and south.
