A Likely Case of Limbic Encephalitis in a Patient With Voltage-Gated Potassium Channel Complex Antibody, Without a Known Antigenic Target: A Review of the Disease State and Value of Antibody Titers

Limbic encephalitis (LE) is an inflammation of the limbic system, which includes the hippocampus, thalamus, hypothalamus, and amygdala. The cardinal sign of LE is severe impairment of short-term memory. Anterograde amnesia is often associated with behavioral and psychiatric symptoms (i.e., delirium and hallucinations) and complex partial and secondary generalized seizures.1 Several antineuronal antibodies have been described in patients with LE (discussed in Ref. 2 —the overview of various autoimmune encephalitides).
