Hydroxyapatite bone cement application for the reconstruction of retrosigmoid craniectomy in the treatment of cranial nerves disorders.

CONCLUSIONS: The application of HBC in the reconstruction of RSC for the treatment of cranial nerves disorders is an effective method, yielding good cosmetic results whilst eliminating CSF leak. Additionally, it is safe due to the lack of deep-seated wound infections with low incidence of chronic incisional pain. PMID: 28680734 [PubMed - in process]

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe goals of this review are two folds: (1) to describe the recent understandings on the roles of calcitonin gene-related peptide- α (CGRP) in bone homeostasis and the underlying mechanisms of related neuronal regulation and (2) to propose innovative CGRP-modulated approaches for enhancing bone regeneration in challenging bone disorders.Recent FindingsCGRP is predominantly produced by the densely distributed sensory neuronal fibers in bone, declining with age. Under mechanical and biochemical stimulations, CGRP releases and exerts either physiological or pathophysiological roles. CGRP at phys...

AbstractIntroductionThe double-blind, phase 3 PREEMPT trials demonstrated the efficacy and tolerability of onabotulinumtoxinA for headache prevention in adults with chronic migraine. This post hoc analysis evaluated the effect of onabotulinumtoxinA on clinically meaningful changes in headache severity, headache-related impact, and quality of life.MethodsPooled, 24-week data were used to determine percentages of patients meeting responder criteria for the change in headache days ( ≥ 50% reduction in headache-day frequency), Headache Impact Test (HIT-6; ≥ 5-point improvement), MSQ Role Function-Res...

AbstractIntroductionThe phase 3 PREEMPT trials demonstrated efficacy and tolerability of onabotulinumtoxinA for headache prevention in adults with chronic migraine. OnabotulinumtoxinA significantly reduced headache frequency from baseline vs. placebo at 24  weeks; however, this measure may not fully capture the benefits of treatment. We evaluated the impact of onabotulinumtoxinA on patient-reported outcomes according to headache responder status.MethodsA post hoc analysis pooled 24-week data from the placebo-controlled, randomized, double-blind treatment phases of the PREEMPT trials. Patients were stratified by random...

There is no consensus in literature about role of transcutaneous electric nerve stimulation (TENS) in chronic pain of TMD. The aim of this poster presentation is to evaluate and compare the effectiveness of TENS therapy for symptomatic relief of chronic pain in specific subgroups (myalgia, disc displacements, arthralgia, and headache attributed to TMJ) of TMD patients. Sixty patients of TMD were included in a study and randomly divided into 2 groups: Group A-TENS group and Group B-Drug group. Thirty patients were given TENS therapy, and 30 patients were given diclofenac sodium 50mg twice daily for 10 days.

AbstractAcupuncture is a form of traditional Chinese medicine that is performed by placing needles or pressure in specific locations on a patient ’s skin to achieve a therapeutic effect. Although used to treat a variety of disorders, one of the most common applications of acupuncture is to treat chronic pain, especially headache and migraine pain. Migraines are difficult to treat, and pharmacotherapies are often the first line of treatment, although these options have many unwanted side effects, such as exacerbation of headache pain in those with chronic migraine. Many complimentary and integrative therapies are avai...

This article enhances provider knowledge and acceptance of the most effective and prevalent mind-body modalities: meditation, guided imagery, clinical hypnosis, and biofeedback. The scientific evidence is strongest for mind-body applications for chronic pain, primary headache, cardiac rehabilitation, and cancer rehabilitation, with preliminary evidence for traumatic brain injury and cerebrovascular events. Mind-body interventions are well-tolerated by patients and should be considered part of standard care in physical medicine and rehabilitation settings. PMID: 32981579 [PubMed - in process]

Abstract OBJECTIVE: In this experimental study, we aimed to determine whether guided music listening (GML) - a music intervention based on models of mood mediation and attention modulation - modulates masticatory muscle activity and awake bruxism in subjects with chronic painful muscular temporomandibular disorders (TMD myalgia, mTMD), a condition causing a significant burden to patients, their families, and healthcare systems. BACKGROUND: Awake bruxism - a stress behavior characterized by clenching of the teeth - is a strong contributor to chronic mTMD. GML modulates psychological stress and motor responses ...

ConclusionOur experience suggests that ONS is not effective in the treatment of NDPH with migrainous features even in centers with experience in treating chronic migraine with ONS. The difference in response rates of chronic migraine and NDPH with migrainous features supports the concept of a different pathophysiology to the two conditions.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of the present systematic review is to provide a current understanding of the mechanism of action and the evidence available to support clinical decision-making. The focus is to summarize randomized controlled trials (RCTs) and nonrandomized or observational studies of spinal cord stimulation in chronic pain to understand clinical effectiveness and the mechanism of action.Recent FindingsSeveral recent studies have demonstrated the benefit of spinal cord stimulation in managing chronic pain. Until recently, the mechanism of action was founded on a central paradigm derived from gate contr...
