Federal Science and Engineering Obligations to Universities and Colleges Declined 2% in FY 2015
Federal agencies obligated $30.5 billion to 1,016 academic institutions for science and engineering (S&E) activities in FY 2015, a decrease from the previous year by 2% in current dollars and 3% after adjusting for inflation. Within the six categories of federal academic S&E obligations-research and development; R&D plant; facilities and equipment for instruction in S&E; fellowships, traineeships, and training grants; general support for S&E; and other S&E activities-only fellowships, traineeships, and training grants showed an increase ($8 million, or 1%). These data are from the Survey of Federal Science and Engineering Support to Universities, Colleges, and Nonprofit Institutions from the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.
