Non-cardiac sarcoid actually affects the heart by reducing coronary flow reserve

Sarcoidosis is a multisystem granulomatous disease of unclear etiology that is characterized by the formation of non-caseating granuloma in various organs, resulting from an immune-mediated reaction to a yet unknown antigen in genetically predisposed individuals1. The prevalence of sarcoidosis is quite variable and contingent upon ethnicity, gender and regions. For example, the prevalence is 10/100,000 for Caucasians in the USA and Europe, while there is an increased prevalence of sarcoid in African-Americans as compared to Caucasians with a ratio 10 –17:1 [1].
