Rate of contralateral hip fracture after dynamic hip screw vs intramedullary nail for treatment of pertrochanteric hip fractures.

In conclusion, there was no difference in the rate of subsequent contralateral hip fracture when comparing HSSP with CMN. Additionally, the time to second surgery between the two treatment modalities was found to be statistically insignificant. It is unclear if bisphosphonate use increased the odds of having a contralateral fracture, regardless of the surgical intervention. The difference in the bisphosphonate effect using propensity score matching suggests that the results may be due to confounding variables and bias. PMID: 28670054 [PubMed - in process]

Mini The surgical results of modified and traditional open-door laminoplasties were retrospectively compared. There were no differences in neurological outcomes and postoperative complications. However, compared with traditional laminoplasty, modified laminoplasty was associated with better maintenance of cervical curvature and ROM, as well as a lower incidence of postoperative axial symptoms. Study Design. A retrospective comparative study. Objective. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of modified unilateral open-door laminoplasty with posterior muscle-ligament complex preservation in treating cerv...

This study involved 102 patients who underwent indirect decompression at 136 levels, with LLIF and posterior fixation. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRIs) were collected preoperatively and several times postoperatively (over a 2-year period starting immediately after surgery). We then quantified the cross-sectional areas of the thecal sac and ligamentum flavum, as well as the anteroposterior diameter of disc bulging, and qualitatively assessed lumbar spinal stenosis according to a modified version of Schizas’ classification [Grades A (mild) to C (severe)]. The Japanese Orthopaedic Association Back Pain Evaluation Quest...

Conclusion. By considering the curve flexibility, LIV determination using FBR method achieved a shorter fusion than STV method in over 70% of Lenke 1A and 2A patients, while being safe and effective at 2-year follow-up. Level of Evidence: 3.

Conclusion. The sagittal profiles of patients with AIS can significantly change after adequate restoration of TK which averaged 17.8°, particularly in the cervical spine. Lordotic reciprocal change in the cervical spine as well as increase in lumbar lordosis can occur in a linear correlation after adequate restoration of TK. There were no significant changes that occurred in the pelvis or lower extremities after AIS corrective surgery. Level of Evidence: 4

Study Design. Retrospective cohort study. Objective. The aim of this study was to compare clinical and radiographic outcomes of patients who underwent stand-alone lateral lumbar interbody fusion (LLIF) to those who underwent posterolateral fusion (PLF) for symptomatic adjacent segment disease (ASD). Summary of Background Data. Recent studies have suggested that LLIF can successfully treat ASD; however, there are no studies to date that compare LLIF with the traditional open PLF in this cohort. Methods. A total of 47 consecutive patients who underwent LLIF or PLF for symptomatic ASD between January 2007 and Augus...

This article reports on a patient with tumefactive rebound of MS who presented with acute onset encephalopathy and progressive motor deficiencies a few days after Fingolimod cessation. Despite the invasive treatment, the disease progressed and resulted in the patient's death. This article discusses the clinical course of the disease and the MRI findings and compares them with the findings of previous reports. The present case shows that rebound activity can occur even after a short-term fingolimod withdrawal and may present with acute onset encephalopathy and aphasia.

CONCLUSIONS: Medical oncologists burdened with the task of tumor measurements in patients on clinical trials may introduce significant variability and investigator bias, with the potential to affect therapeutic response and clinical trial outcomes. Institutional imaging cores may help bridge the gap by providing unbiased and reproducible measurements and enable a leaner workflow. PMID: 31805530 [PubMed - in process]
