Abstract Keshan disease (KD) is an endemic cardiomyopathy, which mainly occurs in China. Selenium deficiency is believed to play an important role in the pathogenesis of KD, but the molecular mechanism of selenium-induced damage remains unclear. To identify the key genes involved in selenium-induced damage, we compared the expression profiles of selenium-related genes between patients with KD and normal controls. Total RNA was isolated, amplified, labeled, and hybridized to Agilent human 4 × 44 K whole genome microarrays. Selenium-related genes were screened using the Comparative Toxicog...

AbstractAlthough enzyme replacement therapy (ERT) has shown benefit in improving cardiac systolic function in a murine model of cardiomyopathy associated with Hunter syndrome, few studies have analyzed its effect in humans. We evaluated the effect of ERT on patients with Hunter syndrome-related cardiomyopathy. We performed a retrospective analysis of serial transthoracic echocardiograms performed before and over the first 5  years after treatment initiation, in 14 patients with Hunter syndrome. An important cardiac remodeling occurred in all patients in this study. There was a significant reduction in left ventricular...

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a growing epidemic in the aging world population [1]. In many patients AF can be asymptomatic leading to an underestimation of its true prevalence and incidence. Conceptually, AF is increasingly considered the consequence of an atrial cardiomyopathy that results from the combined effects of genetic predisposition, risk factors and co-morbidities [2]. Once AF occurs, it causes changes in the structure and function of the atria (atrial remodelling), which promote AF re-initiation and maintenance [3].
