There is a terrible sense of abandonment and rejection when a parent dies by suicide, especially when it happens at a young age. The loss of a parent may have deep repercussions on a person's self-esteem, identity, and outlook for the future. People who endure such a tragic experience as children or adolescents often describe a persistent sense of insecurity and guilt, difficulty in establishing trusting relationships, fear of being abandoned, and self-destructive behaviours, such as use of drugs and binge drinking.
