Laser acupuncture versus reflexology therapy in elderly with rheumatoid arthritis

AbstractThe purposes of this study are to determine and compare efficacy of laser acupuncture versus reflexology in elderly with rheumatoid arthritis. Thirty elderly patients with rheumatoid arthritis aged between 60 and 70  years were classified into two groups, 15 patients each. Group A received laser acupuncture therapy (904 nm, beam area of 1cm2, power 100  mW, power density 100 mW/cm2, energy dosage 4  J, energy density 4 J/cm2, irradiation time 40  s, and frequency 100,000 Hz). The acupuncture points that were exposed to laser radiation are LR3, ST25, ST36, SI3, SI4, LI4, LI11, SP6, SP9, GB25, GB34, and HT7. While group B received reflexology therapy, both offered 12 sessions over 4 weeks. The changes in RAQoL, HAQ, IL-6, MDA, ATP, and ROM at wrist and ankle joints were measured at the beginning and end of treatment. There was significant decrease in RAQoL, HAQ, IL-6, and MDA pre/posttreatment for both groups (p

Llamas-Covarrubias Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is the most common rheumatic autoimmune disease worldwide, which causes progressive joint damage and can lead to functional disability. Despite prominent advances in RA diagnosis and treatment during the last 20years, there is still a need for novel biomarkers that aid in diagnosis and prognosis of this heterogeneous disease. Citrullination is a key post-translational modification implicated on anti-citrullinated prot...

Trouw Carbamylation and citrullination are both post-translational modifications against which (auto)antibodies can be detected in sera of rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients. Carbamylation is the chemical modification of a lysine into a homocitrulline, whereas citrullination is an enzymatic conversion of an arginine into a citrulline. It is difficult to distinguish between the two resulting amino acids due to similarities in struc...

Conclusions ILD-RA is part of a general autoimmune inflammation and should be integrated into the decision-making process for the treatment of RA. There is an unmet need to design an algorithm which will allow prediction of CT-c changes compatible with ILD-RA with a high probability. Hopefully, this will enable treating patients with ILD-RA early, with possible halting of the progression of ILD-RA toward PF.

ConclusionsFindings provide preliminary evidence of an increased MSP burden amongst Aboriginal Australians and, particularly for OA, a mismatch between the disease burden and access to health care. To increase accessibility, health services should initially focus on improving Aboriginal patients’ experiences of care, in particular by improving patient‐practitioner communication. Implications for care and research are outlined. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.

The objective of this study is to describe aspects of health-related quality of life (HRQOL) in Mexican patients with antineutrophil cytoplasmic-associated vasculitis (AAV). Cross-sectional comparison study includes patients with established AAV and a comparison group with rheumatoid arthritis (RA), chronic kidney disease (CKD), and healthy subjects. Variables considered were: socio-demographic data, comorbidities, laboratory, disease activity, damage, and Physician ’s and Patient’s Global Assessment (PhGA and PtGA). The following measurements were done: Pittsburg sleep quality index, Multidimesional Fatigue In...

We describe here the process undertaken by Pfizer to investigate a safety signal for pancreatic cancer with tofacitinib. Potential cases of pancreatic cancer across indications from Pfizer's clinical trials and safety databases were identified and underwent in‐depth case review and external expert consultation. The magnitude of the signal was quantified. The feasibility of formal signal evaluation via a hypothesis‐testing study was explored. As of July 2016, 14 cases of potential pancreatic cancer were identified: eight cases in clinical development trials (psoriasis n = 6; RA n = 1; psoriatic arthr...
