Immunochemical faecal occult blood testing to screen for colorectal cancer: can the screening interval be extended?

Conclusions The diagnostic yield of FIT screening using a lowered positivity threshold in combination with an extended screening interval (up to 5 years) may be similar to conventional FIT strategies. This justifies and motivates further research steps in this direction.

ConclusionOur study provides clinical evidence to support that fatty acid metabolism is associated with cancers and demonstrates that a high FFA level in the serum may be an indicator of cancer.

Pheochromocytoma (PCC) and paraganglioma (PGL) are rare neuroendocrine tumors associated with high cardiovascular morbidity and variable risk of malignancy. The current therapy of choice is surgical resection. Nevertheless, PCCs/PGLs are associated with a lifelong risk of tumor persistence or recurrence. A high rate of germline or somatic mutations in numerous genes has been found in these tumors. For some, the tumorigenic processes are initiated during embryogenesis. Such tumors carry gene mutations leading to pseudohypoxic phenotypes and show more immature characteristics than other chromaffin cell tumors; they are also ...

Treatment of a variety of bowel diseases like Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, colonic cancers, colonic pathologies, and systemic delivery of drugs at the target sites can be done with the help of targeted drug delivery technique. Conventional colon specific drug delivery systems lack specificity and release significant amount of drug prior reaching the target site. Hence, efficient drug delivery system that ensures effective release of the drug at the colon is still a sought after research arena. Ligand anchored therapy is a strong and effective approach to execute drug delivery in selective target cells, for bo...

In this study, we found that eriodictyol has anti-tumor activity in lung, colon, breast, pancreas, and liver cancer, and most significantly in glioma cell lines. Eriodictyol dose- and time-dependently suppresses cell proliferation, migration, and invasion in U87MG and CHG-5 glioma cells. In addition, eriodictyol induces apoptosis in U87MG and CHG-5 cells, as evaluated by flow cytometry, immunofluorescence, and Western blot. Furthermore, eriodictyol downregulates the phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K)/Akt/NF-κB signaling pathway in a concentration-dependent manner. Moreover, the effects of eriodictyol on the apoptosis o...

Circular RNA (circRNA), a type of RNA that is widely expressed in mammalian cells, is considered to be essential in tumorigenesis. CircRNA can regulate target gene expression by interacting with the corresponding microRNA (miRNA). Our preliminary results showed that the expression levels of 1,817 circRNAs were significantly different in colon cancer tissue compared with paracancerous tissue, of which 1,236 were upregulated and 581 were downregulated. By using RT-PCR, we confirmed that the expression of hsa_circ_0007843, hsa_circ_0010575, hsa_circ_0007331, and hsa_circ_0001615 was significantly higher in colon cancer tissue...

This study aimed to clarify the relationship between tumor locations and the clinicopathological molecular marker features in eastern China CRC patients. We continuously collected data on 2,356 CRC patients who underwent surgical resection from January 2017 to April 2019. Right-sided colorectal cancer (RCC), was located from the cecum to the transverse colon and left-side colorectal cancer (LCRC) was located from the splenic flexure to the rectum. The clinicopathological indices (including age, sex, pTNM stage, mucinous production, and distant metastasis) and frequency of molecular markers such as KRAS, NRAS, BRAF, and mic...

Rojsanga The present study is intended to carry out the chemical standardization and evaluation of the anti-proliferative activity of A. elliptica fruit extract. A. elliptica fruit powder was extracted with ethanol. The obtained extract was assessed for total phenolic content using the Folin–Ciocalteu method. Moreover, a simple, accurate, and precise reversed phase high-performance liquid chromatographic method was developed and validated to determine the embelin content of A. elliptica fruit extract. Then, the extract and embelin were investigated for their anti-proliferative effect against HCT-116 cells. Fi...

ejandro Blanco-Labra Teresa García-Gasca A Tepary bean lectin fraction (TBLF) has been studied because it exhibits differential cytotoxic and anticancer effects on colon cancer. The present work focuses on the evaluation of the apoptotic mechanism of action on colon cancer cells. Initially, lethal concentrations (LC50) were obtained for the three studied cell lines (HT-29, RKO and SW-480). HT-29 showed the highest LC50, 10 and 100 times higher than that of RKO and SW-480 cells, respectively. Apoptosis was evaluated by flow cytometry, where HT-29 cells showed the highest levels of early and total apoptosis, cas...

ConclusionDespite malignant disease, overall survival of patients after metastasectomy for pancreatic metastasis is acceptable. Better survival appears to be associated with the primary tumor entity. Further research should focus on molecular markers to elucidate the mechanisms of pancreatic metastasis to choose the suitable therapeutic approach for the individual patient.
