Authors: Serakinci N, Tulay P, Kalkan R Abstract Stem cells have the ability to perpetuate themselves through self-renewal and generate mature cells of a particular tissue through differentiation. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) play an important role in tissue homeostasis - supporting tissue regeneration. MSCs are rare pluripotent cells supporting hematopoietic and mesenchymal cell lineages. MSCs have a great therapeutic potential in cancer therapy, as well as stem cell exosome and/or microvesicle-mediated tissue regeneration. In this review, the use of hMSCs in stem cell-mediated cancer therapy is discussed. PM...

In this study, the influence of foetal bovine serum (FBS) and pooled human serum (pHS) on the proliferation, morphology and migration of stem cells from human extracted deciduous teeth (SHED) was compared. SHED (n = 3) was expanded in KnockOut DMEM supplemented with either pHS (pHS-SM) or FBS (FBS-SM). pHS was prepared using peripheral blood serum of six healthy male adults, aged between 21 and 35 years old. The number of live SHED was significantly higher, from passage 5 to 7, when cultured in pHS-SM compared to those cultured in FBS-SM ( p

Authors: Pappová L, Kazimierová I, Jošková M, Šutovská M, Fraňová S Abstract Erdosteine as a mucolytic agent that decreases mucus viscosity and facilitates mucus expulsion from the airways by cough or ciliary movement. Our objective was to determine whether erdosteine can directly contribute to mucus clearance. We addressed the issue by monitoring acute and chronic effects of erdosteine on ciliary beat frequency (CBF), cough sensitivity, and airway smooth muscle reactivity. The experiments were performed in healthy guinea pigs. Erdosteine (10 mg/kg) was adminis...

Authors: Paradowska-Stankiewicz I, Korczyńska MR, Cieślak K, Kowalczyk D, Szymański K, Brydak LB Abstract Influenza vaccination is the best measure available to prevent seasonal influenza infection. The majority of studies on vaccine effectiveness in the 2015/16 season conducted in the European I-MOVE+ Project, show that a match between the circulating influenza strains in the general public and those included in the vaccine for the Northern Hemisphere was low to moderate. As part of I-MOVE+, Poland has implemented a case control negative study design and molecular biology methods, such as real time RT-PCR, to a...

Authors: Olczak-Kowalczyk D, Roszkowska-Blaim M, Dąbkowska M, Swoboda-Kopeć E, Gozdowski D, Mizerska-Wasiak M, Demkow U, Pańczyk-Tomaszewska M Abstract Oral colonization with Candida spp. is not synonymous with a systemic active infection. The aim of the study was to evaluate enzymatic activity of Candida strains isolated from the oral cavity in patients with nephrotic syndrome (NS) and to compare it with the activity determined in urine. We studied 32 children with NS and 26 control healthy children. Children with NS were treated with glucocorticosteroids, cyclosporin A, mycophenolate mofetil or azathioprine. I...

This study seeks to determine the effects of serum vitamin D and urine cotinine on asthma severity and on T regulatory cells (Tregs) and other immune-related factors such as CD3, CD4, CD8, CD19, CD16/56, and anti-CD3 HLA-DR3. The study involved 34 children with asthma. Disease severity was assessed with the Asthma Control Test, spirometry, and the fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO). The control group consisted of 18 healthy children. We found a significantly lower proportion of Tregs in the serum of asthmatic children compared with the control group (p

In this study, we investigate the association of EBV antibody profile with clinical and serological parameters in SLE. Eighty‐seven clinically diagnosed SLE patients fulfilling the American College of Rheumatology (ACR) Classification criteria and fifty healthy individuals were enrolled in this case control study. Anti‐VCA IgM, anti‐VCA IgG and anti‐EBNA IgG were detected by ELISA technique. Antibodies concentrations between two groups were compared using Mann‐Whitney whereas the difference in categorical data was compared using Chi‐square considering statistical significance at p

CONCLUSION: This study demonstrated that Na(18)F PET/CT coregistered with MRI is a feasible molecular imaging biomarker to assess knee osseous metabolic changes serially in an in vivo canine model of knee PTOA. Moreover, it brings a novel musculoskeletal preclinical imaging methodology that can provide unique insights into PTOA pathophysiology. PMID: 28730928 [PubMed - in process]

Authors: Smucny M, Westermann RW, Winters M, Schickendantz MS Abstract Medial ulnar collateral ligament (UCL) injuries have become increasingly prevalent in overhead athletes. The orthopaedic literature contains a wealth of information on operative management of these injuries. However, there are few high-quality longitudinal studies on non-operative care of UCL injuries. The purpose of this review is to describe the non-operative approach to managing UCL injuries, including recommended rehabilitation strategies and predictors of successful non-operative treatment.
