The Evaluation of Cardiac Sarcoidosis using 18F-FDG PET Scan and the Impact on the Patients Plan of Care.

Conclusion: 18F-FDG PET scan had an impact on the evaluation of cardiac sarcoidosis and the patient’s plan of care. 18F-FDG PET was able to rule out cardiac sarcoidosis in 11/14 or (79%) patients that had suspicious or indeterminate MRI results. 18F-FDG PET imaging was alternatively useful in patients that did not have a prior MRI. 3/8 had positive exams (37%) and were treated steroids. 3/8 had negative (37%) and had pacemaker placement or continued long term steroid therapy, and 2/ 8 had indeterminate (25%) results for cardiac sarcoidosis, both had ICD placement. PET imaging was also significant in evaluating the response to treatment. 18F-FDG PET scan showed negative results or significant decreased uptake in 4 /5 (80%) patients who underwent steroid treatment and had PET imaging before and after treatment.
