Acquired pseudoxanthoma elasticum phenotype in a patient with hemoglobin Southampton, a rare and severe hemoglobinopathy

A 46-year-old woman was referred to the dermatology clinic by the ophthalmological surgeons to investigate the cause of her bilateral angioid streaks, associated with neovascularization. She originally presented with binocular progressive visual loss over a period of years and was now unable to drive, could count fingers with her right eye and had 6/15 vision in her left eye. She reported no skin complaints other than dermatitis of the hands. Past medical history was remarkable for her diagnosis of Southampton hemoglobinopathy, a cause of severe chronic Heinz body hemolytic anemia.
