Alexithymia, Illness Perception and Self-management Competency in Psoriasis.

In conclusion, this study shows that alexithymia indicates inferior self-management and reaffirms the associations with illness perception. Further research is required into these relationships. PMID: 28536730 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Phototherapeutic modalities induce apoptosis of keratinocytes and immune cells, impact cytokine production, downregulate the IL-23/Th17 axis, and induce regulatory T cells. As in anti-IL-17 or anti-IL-23 antibody treatment, the dual action of phototherapy on skin and the immune system is likely responsible for sustained resolution of lesions in diseases such as psoriasis. In cutaneous T cell lymphoma, phototherapy may function by causing tumor cell apoptosis and eliminating the neoplastic and inflammatory infiltrate. Further research on phototherapeutic mechanisms will help advance, optimize, and refine dermatologic treatm...

Authors: Dutzan N, Abusleme L Abstract T helper 17 (Th17) cells were first described as a T helper subset involved in the pathogenesis of experimental autoimmune inflammation. Since then, these cells have been described as orchestrators of immunopathology in several human inflammatory conditions including psoriasis, rheumatoid arthritis, and inflammatory bowel disease. More recently, the crucial role of Th17 cells in the regulation of immunity and protection of barrier sites has been unveiled. In the present work, we review the available evidence regarding Th17 cells in health and disease with a focus on the oral m...

Conclusions and implicationsSome preliminary evidence supports the use of zinc in the treatment of acne vulgaris and hidradenitis suppurativa; however, more research is needed with similar methodologies and larger sample sizes in these diseases. Further, zinc may be of some benefit in the treatment plan for atopic dermatitis and diaper dermatitis; however, additional studies should be conducted to further evaluate these potentially positive associations. To date, no evidence is available to suggest that zinc may be of benefit in rosacea and psoriasis; however, limited data are available evaluating the use of zinc in these conditions.

AbstractInterleukin 17 (IL-17) is one of the pro-inflammatory cytokine. Psoriasin is a noticeably over-expressed protein found in the skin lesions of psoriatic patients. Our current study was planned to examine the association of ( − 947 A/G) single nucleotide polymorphism (SNP) in IL-17RA promoter region (rs4819554) with psoriasis susceptibility in Egyptian psoriatic patients. Our study included 100 patients and 100, age as well as sex matched, control groups. IL-17RA SNP association was studied using allelic discrimination . RT-qPCR and ELISA were done to assess IL-17 expression. ELISA was performed to assess psori...

AbstractDespite a ballooning therapeutic tool box, treatment responses to newer biologic agents and oral small molecules in psoriatic arthritis (PsA) and spondyloarthritis (SpA) are of similar magnitude to those observed with anti ‐Tumor Necrosis Factor (TNF) medications (1, 2).The PsA and SpA therapeutic outcomes stand in marked contrast to those reported in psoriasis where blockade of molecules in the IL‐23/IL‐17 pathway often provide prolonged, deep responses and in some cases even remission (3). The underlying mecha nisms that account for these divergent outcomes in the skin and joint are not well understood and ...

Authors: Merk HF Abstract Coal tar therapy was used for centuries to treat skin disorders characterised by inflammation and skin barrier damage. It has been shown that the aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AhR) is the key target structure for these pharmacological effects of coal tar. Since coal tar has been used less and less because of the carcinogenicity of many ingredients of coal tar, other ligands of AhR were studied. Tapinarof is such a ligand and proved to be a promising new drug to treat psoriasis and atopic dermatitis. Since many endogenous and exogenous ligands of AhR are known, it may be that this &q...
