[Comment] Antimicrobial resistance and food safety in Africa

Antimicrobial resistance is a growing problem around the world, including in Africa, and is associated with increasing mortality and medical costs.1,2 Prevention and treatment of the emergence of resistant pathogens requires contextual knowledge about the way both drugs and microbial ecologies interact and are locally understood. Suboptimal, non-prescribed, and excessive use of antimicrobials for human and animal health has long been documented in both high-income and low-income countries,3,4 and medical and agricultural practices have long been implicated in the global rise of antimicrobial resistance.
