Three stage esophagectomy combined with abdominal aortic aneurysm repair: first case in the literature

The purpose of this report is to describe the synchronous surgical treatment of an abdominal aortic aneurysm (AAA) with concomitant esophageal cancer (EC) with a three-stage esophagectomy, a real management challenge especially in establishing the therapeutic priorities and the ideal treatment approach.A 65-year old male was referred for treatment in our hospital with the diagnosis of AAA. He complained of general fatigue, weight loss and intermittent dysphagia. Contrast-enhanced CT and upper endoscopy showed the AAA and a large gastroesophageal junction (GEJ) tumor respectively.
