Ressenti des patients lorsque la sexualit é est abordée par un médecin généraliste : étude qualitative sur 96 patients adultes du Languedoc-Roussillon, France

Conclusion La plupart des patients ne ressentent pas comme intrusif le fait d’être interrogés sur leur sexualité par le médecin généraliste, même s’ils sont venus consulter pour un motif différent. Aborder cette question nécessite un cadre approprié mêlant confiance, bienveillance et empathie. Si ces éléments sont réunis, le patient sera capable de dépasser sa surprise et saura qu’un espace de liberté lui est ouvert. Purpose Many medical doctors avoid discussing sexuality with their patients, especially because they are afraid of invading their privacy. The objective of this work is to determine the proportion of patients who actually feel embarrassed by this question. Methods A qualitative study was carried out among 96 patients aged from 18 to 86 years old within 4 medical practitioners in the French region of Languedoc-Roussillon. During a general medical routine consultation, the question “How is your sexuality going?” was asked by a substitute general practitioner. Secondly, during semi-structured interviews, the patients were asked how they felt about this question. Results Thirty-four patients (35%) were surprised by this question. Seven patients (7%) found the question inappropriate. Eighty-nine patients (93%) had a neutral or positive feeling.
