Hints of Lyme: Disseminated Borreliosis Involving the Mitral and Tricuspid Valves

A 33-year-old male with cystic fibrosis 220 days removed from bilateral lung transplantation presented with 1 week of intermittent fevers (maximum 102 °F), malaise, bilateral lower extremity edema, unintentional weight gain (8 pounds), and 2 days of dyspnea on exertion. His post-transplant course was complicated by persistent leukopenia with intermittent neutropenia attributed to his anti-rejection regimen of mycophenolate mofetil and tacrolimus. On presentation, his temperature was 98.9°F, his heart rate was 84 beats per minute, his blood pressure was 148/83 mmHg, and he was breathing 20 times per minute with an oxygen saturation of 98% on room air.

This study aimed to investigate the anti-tumor effects of Nanoscale bubbles delivered yeast cytosine deaminase thymidine kinase/connexin 26 (YCD-TK/Cx26) on tumor cell proliferation and tumor growth. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Nanoscale bubble was prepared using thin-film hydration-sonication method. Nanoscale bubble-LV5-YCD-TK+PCD-Cx26 was generated and transfected into BIU-87 cells. MTT assay was employed to detect cell viability. Apoptosis was determined using a flow cytometry assay. YCD-TK and Cx26 expressions were detected using Western blot and Real Time-PCR (RT-PCR). BIU-87 cells were transplanted into mice to estab...

MANCHESTER, N.H. (AP) — A woman who was severely burned in a domestic violence attack in Vermont is hoping for a second face transplant after doctors recently discovered tissue damage that likely will lead to the loss of her donor face. Carmen Blandin Tarleton was burned over 80% of her body when her estranged husband beat her with a baseball bat and doused her body with lye in 2007. Six years ago, she received a face transplant at Brigham and Woman’s Hospital in Boston, where she’s being evaluated for a possible second transplant. Carmen Blandin Tarleton at a press conference at Brigham and Women’s...

Publication date: December 2019Source: Biomedicine &Pharmacotherapy, Volume 120Author(s): Peiqi Xu, Kai Yin, Xinyi Tang, Jie Tian, Yue Zhang, Jie Ma, Huaxi Xu, Qinglei Xu, Shengjun WangAbstractMetformin, an oral medicine broadly used for the treatment of type 2 diabetes, has been found to significantly improve tumor incidence and survival in large-scale clinical analysis. In recent years, the antitumor effect and mechanism of metformin have received much attention. Myeloid-derived suppressor cells (MDSCs), a major immunosuppressive cell type that accumulates in tumor-bearing hosts, can inhibit T cells and promote tumor...

CONCLUSION: The Korean urgency classification for LTx is determined by using very limited parameters and may not be a true reflection of urgency. Status 0 patients seem to have poor outcomes compared to the other urgency status patients, despite having the highest priority for donor lungs. Further multi-center and nationwide studies are needed to revise the lung allocation system to reflect true urgency and provide the best benefit of lung transplantation. Authors: Yang G, Yang C, She Y, Shen Z, Gao P Abstract Recent studies showed that long non-coding RNAs (lncRNAs) could play critical roles in tumors progression. However, the performance of LINC01354 is still limited in non-small cell lung cancer (NSCLC). In the current study, our results showed that LINC01354 was significantly increased in NSCLC tissues and cell lines. High LINC01354 expression was associated with advanced TNM stage and poor prognosis in NSCLC patients. Loss-of-function assays revealed that knockdown of LINC01354 reduced lung cancer cells proliferation and invasive ability in vitro. Subsequently, ...
