Bone Quality Characteristics Obtained by Fourier Transform Infrared and Raman Spectroscopic Imaging

Conclusion The PO4 3- bands in the FTIR spectra were affected by changes in calcium phosphate composition rather than by changes in crystal size. Thus, FTIR is more suitable for the evaluation of mineral maturity than crystallinity; Raman spectroscopy is more sensitive to crystallinity than FTIR.

z Domingo Palacios-Ceña Chronic kidney disease (CKD) has considerable effects on the quality of life of patients, impairing everyday activities and leading to lifestyle changes, as well as affecting body image and intimate relationships. Our aim was to describe the experience of female patients with CKD at an ambulatory dialysis unit regarding body changes and sexuality. A qualitative phenomenological study exploring how 18 female patients, treated at the dialysis unit of a Spanish hospital, perceived their sexuality and intimate relationships. Data were collected using in-depth interviews, researcher field no...

This study aimed to describe the prevalence of FID in patients with CKD on HD, characterize the included individuals in terms of clinical and workup parameters, and assess their nutritional, oxidative stress, and inflammation statuses. This cross-sectional study assembled a convenience sample of 183 patients with CKD on HD treated in Southern Brazil. Patients meeting the inclusion and exclusion criteria were divided into two groups, one with anemic subjects with FID and one with anemic patients without FID. Participants answered a questionnaire probing into socio-epidemiological factors, underwent anthropometric measuremen...

ScarpaAbstractSerum homocysteine (Hcy) increases in people and dogs with chronic kidney disease (CKD). Hyperhomocysteinemia (HHcy) has also been associated with CKD-related hypertension and proteinuria. The aims of this study were to: (1) validate an enzymatic method for quantification of Hcy in feline serum; (2) evaluate whether HHcy was associated with the presence and severity of CKD, proteinuria or hypertension; and (3) determine whether HHcy could predict disease progression. The intra- an...

Tranexamic acid reduces blood loss and transfusion requirements with no significant thrombotic adverse effects. Postoperative seizures have been seen in cardiac surgical patients in association with patient (advanced age, underlying neurologic disease, chronic kidney disease); surgical (open cardiac procedures, long bypass times); and drug (high tranexamic acid dose) risk factors. Tranexamic acid dosing regimens should be decreased in patients with chronic kidney dysfunction secondary to reduced clearance and drug accumulation.

Abstract PURPOSE: The present study aimed to investigate the prevalence, characteristics, and clinical significance of concomitant specific cardiomyopathies in subjects with bicuspid aortic valves (BAVs). MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 1186 adults with BAV (850 males, mean age 56±14 years) at a single tertiary center were comprehensively reviewed. Left ventricular non-compaction, hypertrophic cardiomyopathy, and idiopathic dilated cardiomyopathy were confirmed when patients fulfilled current clinical and echocardiographic criteria. Clinical and echocardiographic characteristics, including comorbidit...

Authors: Deng W, Chen K, Liu S, Wang Y Abstract Circular antisense non-coding RNA in the INK4 locus (cANRIL) participated in inflammation of endothelial cells. However, whether cANRIL is associated with inflammatory injury of HK-2 cells, thereby affecting chronic kidney disease has not been investigated. We tested the hypothesis that cANRIL participated in inflammatory response in vitro. HK-2 cells were stimulated by lipopolysaccharides (LPS). RT-qPCR was executed for cANRIL expression assessment. After transfection, cell viability, apoptosis, inflammatory cytokines and ROS generation were appraised to evaluate the...
