General health status of long-term cervical cancer survivors after radiotherapy

AbstractPurposeTo evaluate the global health status of long-term cervical cancer survivors (LCCS) who survived for more than 4  years after curative radiation treatment (RT).Patients and methodsMedical records of 562  women treated with RT in our institution between 2003 and 2010 were reviewed. Excluding 259 women who died of disease or were lost to follow-up, disease status and late morbidities were evaluated in 303 LCCS. Quality of life (QoL) was analyzed in 168 LCCS using a questionnaire from the Europea n Organization for the Research and Treatment of Cancer, and the results were compared with an age-matched healthy Korean female population.ResultsMedian follow-up was 6.8  years (range 4.1–12.5 years). There were 14 deaths (7 cancer specific) and 14 recurrences (5 local recurrences and 9 distant metastases). The median time to recurrence was 6.0 years (range 4.1–8.2 years). Grade ≥2 late toxicities were frequently observed in the bladder (19%) and sm all/large intestine (15%). Multivariate analysis revealed a higher rate of late toxicity in patients aged ≥51 years at diagnosis (small/large intestine: hazard ratio, HR, 2.5 [1.2–5.5]; bladder: HR 2.4 [1.3–4.5]; and bone: HR 4.3 [1.2–15.8]) than patients aged

Child and adolescent survivors of cancer —particularly those experiencing cognitive problems—may be at higher risk of suicidal thoughts than other youth their age, suggests areport inPsycho-Oncology.“Survivors of pediatric cancer are at elevated risk for both neurocognitive and psychological difficulties following cancer treatment,” wrote Christina M. Sharkey, Ph.D., of Children’s National Hospital in Washington, D.C., and colleagues. Studies of adult cancer survivors suggest there may be a link between neurocognitive deficits and suicidal ideation, but little is known of whether such deficits...

This study sought to design and validate a  nomogram capable of predicting outcomes in extensive-stage small-cell lung cancer (ES-SCLC) patients with superior vena cava syndrome (SVCS) based upon the timing of their radiotherapy treatment.MethodsWe retrospectively analyzed data from 175 ES-SCLC patients with SCVS, comparing outcomes between those that underwent upfront thoracic radiotherapy (initial radiotherapy with simultaneous chemotherapy) and those that underwent consolidative thoracic radiotherapy (following 4 –6 cycles of chemotherapy). Significant predictors of patient outcomes were identified using...

ConclusionMagnetic Resonance Image (MRI) linac-based planning for HNC is already feasible with good quality. Generally, an increased number of segments and increasing planning experience are able to provide better results regarding planning quality without significantly prolonging overall treatment time.

AbstractA  70-year old male with stage I large cell neuroendocrine carcinoma (LCNEC) of the lung underwent resection of a metachronous 5 cm brain metastasis and received postoperative hypofractionated stereotactic radiotherapy (hfSRT). Five sequential nodular leptomeningeal metastases up to 5.3 cm in di ameter were diagnosed on MRI within 10 months and were treated with SRT. Currently the patient has no evidence of intracranial disease 24 months after last irradiation without chemotherapy or whole brain radiotherapy. This is the first report of sustained complete remission of multiple large lepto me...

The objective of this study was to assess the efficacy and feasibility of neoadjuvant concurrent chemoradiotherapy (cCRT) in selected grade 2–3 patients with limb or trunk wall STS, and to compare this schedule to a  sequential approach combining neoadjuvant chemotherapy and adjuvant radiotherapy.MethodsWe retrospectively included patients who underwent neoadjuvant cCRT at two comprehensive cancer centers from 1992 –2016. We then compared these results to those of patients treated with preoperative chemotherapy and postoperative radiotherapy from a third comprehensive cancer center with a pr...
