73-Year-Old Asymptomatic Woman With Anemia

A 73-year-old woman with a history of atrial fibrillation status post ablation who was receiving anticoagulation with warfarin presented to the general internal medicine clinic without symptoms or concerns for an annual physical examination. Her medical history included hypertension, hyperlipidemia with statin intolerance, osteopenia, osteoarthritis, impaired fasting glucose levels, fibrocystic breast changes, seasonal allergies, and a thyrocervical trunk aneurysm that was stable on serial ultrasonographic imaging.

Conclusions: The abnormal location of FLT3 caused by different glycosylation status leads to the distinguishing signaling pathways. Targeting on FLT3 glycosylation may provide a new perspective for therapeutic strategies. Authors: Wego MT, Poualeu Kamani SL, Miaffo D, Nchouwet ML, Kamanyi A, Wansi Ngnokam SL Abstract The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of the aqueous extract of Baillonella toxisperma stem bark on dexamethasone-induced insulin resistance in rats. A quantitative phytochemical study was done on the aqueous extract of Baillonella toxisperma for the total phenol, flavonoid, and flavonol determination. Insulin resistance was induced by intraperitoneal injection of dexamethasone (1 mg/kg) for 8 days, one hour before oral administration of different treatments (extract at doses of 60, 120, and 24...

We describe the case of a patient with myelofibrosis (MF)-associated PH who developed left ventricular dysfunction after five years of treatment with the JAK 1/2 inhibitor, ruxolitinib. This is the first report with histopathological findings that demonstrate possible contradictory effects of a JAK 1/2 inhibitor: improvement of MF-associated PH and cardiotoxicity. Even if hyaluronic acid is still considered as the gold standard, research is now focusing on the development of new products with enhanced injectability and yet reasonable viscoelastic beh...

In this study of the National Trauma Data Bank Data set (2007–2009 and 2010–2016), these rates were reexamined and risk factors associated with these complications were assessed. Data quality is improved in the later data set; the incidence of deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary embolism was 0.28% and 0.21%, respectively, in the 2010–2016 data. Prophylaxis, male gender, treatment in a university hospital, open reduction, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease, and hypertension were notable significant risk factors for pulmonary embolism. For deep venous thrombosis, male gender, bleeding disorder, angina, ...

AbstractPurpose of the reviewPremedication using antihistamines and/or corticosteroids has been widely used to prevent reoccurrence of immediate hypersensitivity reactions (iHR) after iodinated contrast media (ICM). However, efficacy has been debated, especially in high-risk patients. Novel findings on the role and risks of premedication and preventive strategies are summarized.Recent findingsThe rate and severity of iHR occurring despite premedication indicate that premedication is not a panacea and the intensity usually reflects that of the initial reaction. Next, the number needed to treat (NNT) to prevent one serious I...

We describe a rare presentation of DAVF in a patient with multiple DAVF, at 3 separate sites within the cranial cavity; associated with a medical history of two traumatic motor-vehicle accidents, total anomalous pulmonary venous return (TAPVR), and acquired aplastic anemia. We describe our approach in the treatment of this complex condition. PMID: 31536637 [PubMed - in process]

Renewed concerns about a Department of Justice (DoJ) investigation involving a key player in the atrial fibrillation space has prompted one medtech analyst to review similar investigations in the industry. In March 2018, Mason, OH-based AtriCure, disclosed that it received a civil investigative demand from the DoJ over potential off-label marketing of the company's Deep hybrid procedure products, which account for about 10% of AtriCure's total sales. AtriCure's Deep procedure is not FDA approved to treat atrial fibrillation, but the devices that are used in the procedure have FDA clearan...
