Intraoperative Optical Coherence Tomography-Assisted Descemet Stripping Automated Endothelial Keratoplasty for Anterior Chamber Fibrous Ingrowth

Conclusions: We conclude that intraoperative OCT is a useful tool during DSAEK surgery, particularly in complicated cases such as anterior segment fibrous ingrowth and significant corneal edema.

Seven years ago, Jason Esterhuizen was in a horrific car crash that destroyed his eyes, plunging him into total darkness. Today, he ’s regained visual perception and more independence, thanks to an experimental device implanted in his brain by researchers at UCLA Health.“Now I can do things that I couldn’t do before,” said Esterhuizen, 30, who moved from his native South Africa to participate in the clinical trial at UCLA. “I can sort the laundry, find my way in lighted hallways without using a cane and cross the street more safely. It’s making my life mu ch easier.”The device...

This article reviews complications and adverse events of plaque brachytherapy, including scleral necrosis, strabismus, cataract, glaucoma, and retinopathies as well as management of these conditions. For practicing oncologists and ophthalmologists, these complications are important to understand, identify, and treat. Additionally, an understanding of common complications of brachytherapy should influence the decision of pursuing it as a treatment option. PMID: 31523242 [PubMed]

Smartphones are an increasingly common and rapidly developing tool in clinical practice. Numerous applications or ‘apps’ are available for use on smartphones that aim to help clinicians perform a variety of tasks at the point of care. A large number of ophthalmology-related medical apps that can perform a variety of clinically relevant functions are now available in virtual stores such as the Google Play™ Store or the Apple App Store®. On the ophthalmic front, these include measures of visual acuity, tools to assist in the assessment and treatment of conditions such as amblyopia and glaucoma, as well ...

CONCLUSIONS: Commonly used visual field cluster criteria have high false-positive rates that vary widely depending on the definition used. These findings highlight the need to carefully consider the criteria used when designing and interpreting glaucoma clinical studies. TRIAL REGISTRATION NUMBER: NCT00221923. o B, Vera J Abstract Purpose/Aim: To assess the changes in anterior eye segment biometrics and intraocular pressure during and after wearing swimming goggles. Materials and methods: Anterior segment biometry and intraocular pressure were assessed in twenty healthy young adults (22.2 ± 4.7 years) during the wearing of a drilled swimming goggle. The central corneal thickness, anterior chamber depth, anterior chamber volume and anterior chamber angle, using the Pentacam rotating Scheimpflug camera (Oculus Optikgerate GmbH, Wetzlar, Germany), and intraocular pressure, using a rebound tonometer, were obtained be...

In this study, researchers studied 438,952 participants in the UK Biobank, who had a total of 24,980 major coronary events - defined as the first occurrence of non-fatal heart attack, ischaemic stroke, or death due to coronary heart disease. They used an approach called Mendelian randomisation, which uses naturally occurring genetic differences to randomly divide the participants into groups, mimicking the effects of running a clinical trial. People with genes associated with lower blood pressure, lower LDL cholesterol, and a combination of both were put into different groups, and compared against those without thes...
