Genetic and epigenetic alterations in meningiomas

Meningiomas represent the most common primary tumors of the central nervous system, making up nearly one third of all primary intracranial tumors [1] and having an incidence of 4.4 cases per 100,000 person-years [2]. Intracranial meningiomas are more common in women than men and frequently occur in patients aged 50 –60 years [3]. There is evidence that the incidence of meningiomas in patients older than 70 is 3.5 times higher than in those under 70 in both sexes [4]. Autopsy and imagingstudies indicate that the incidence of meningiomas is roughly 3% in the population [5].
