Conclusions: Baseline RDW should be integrated into clinical practice as a predictor of ischemic stroke occurrence and outcome. Future studies should also explore the dynamic change of RDW in post-stroke patients to evaluate the clinical significance of RDW and its impact on the inflammatory state of ischemic stroke.

Conclusions: Leukocyte count is associated with short-term and long-term clinical outcomes of acute ischemic stroke and may have predictive value, especially in patients with certain specific characteristics.

Background: The “smoking paradox” indicates that patients with acute ischemic stroke (AIS) who smoke at the time of their stroke may have a better prognosis after intravenous thrombolysis than non-smokers. However, findings are inconsistent and data analyzing the effect of smoking on treatment efficacy of intravenous thrombolysis are scarce. Methods: We performed a pre-specified post-hoc subgroup analysis of the Efficacy and Safety of MRI-Based Thrombolysis in Wake-Up Stroke (WAKE-UP) trial that randomized AIS patients with unknown time of symptom onset who had diffusion-weighted imaging-fluid attenuation invers...

Abstract Introduction: Metabolic syndrome (MetS) is defined as an association between diabetes, hypertension, obesity and dyslipidemia and an increased risk of cardiovascular disease. Mitral annular calcification (MAC) is associated with several cardiovascular disorders, including coronary artery disease, atrial fibrillation (AF), heart failure, ischemic stroke and increased mortality. The CHA2DS2-VASc score is used to estimate thromboembolic risk in AF. However, the association among MAC, MetS and thromboembolic risk is unknown and was evaluated in the current study. Methods: The study group consisted of 94 patients with ...

Written by Meyers, edits by SmithA 50-ish year old man was working construction when he suddenly collapsed. Coworkers started CPR within 1 minute of collapse. EMS arrived within 10 minutes and continued CPR and ACLS, noting alternating asystole and sinus bradycardia during rhythm checks. He received various ACLS medications and arrived at the ED with a perfusing rhythm.Initial vitals included heart rate around 100 bpm and BP 174/96. Here is his initial ECG, very soon after ROSC:What do you think?Sinus tachycardia.  There is incomplete RBBB (QRS duration less than 120 ms).  There is diffuse STD, maximal in V4-V5 a...

ConclusionsAF recurs in approximately 30% of patients with POAF with malignancy in the subsequent year; most recurrences are asymptomatic.RésuméContexteIl arrive fréquemment qu’un patient subissant une intervention chirurgicale non cardiaque présente une fibrillation auriculaire périopératoire (FAPO). On ne sait toutefois pas si d’autres épisodes de fibrillation auriculaire (FA) surviennent par la suite.MéthodologieLes auteurs ont mené une étude d’observation prospective unicentrique auprès de patients ayant subi une intervention...

LCZ696 (sacubitril/valsartan) is an angiotensin receptor-neprilysin inhibitor and has shown beneficial effects in patients with heart failure. However, whether LCZ696 protects against left atrial (LA) and LA appendage (LAA) dysfunction is still unclear. The present study aimed to assess the efficacy of LCZ696 for improving the function of LA and LAA. We performed both a retrospective study comparing LCZ696 with angiotensin receptor blockers (ARBs) to assess the efficacy of LCZ696 in patients with atrial fibrillation and an animal study in a mouse model with pressure overload. LA peak systolic strain, LAA emptying flow velo...

A 68-year old man with a history of hypertension, diabetes, coronary artery disease and an obliterating lower limbs arteritis, presented for a stroke. Electrocardiogram did not show atrial fibrillation nor ischemic electrocardiographic signs. White blood cell count (10800/m3) was high but eosinophil count (234/mm3) was normal. Atherosclerosis origin of the stroke was suspected.

In conclusion, AF seems to have a higher prevalence in the general population than previously thought, and is mostly associa ted with hypertension, cardiomyopathy and rheumatic heart disease in SSA. It is associated with a high incidence of heart failure and stroke. The management of AF is suboptimal in SSA, especially with a low uptake of oral anticoagulation. This article is protected by copyright. All rights reserved.
