A Comparison of Visual Recognition of the Laryngopharyngeal Structures Between High and Standard Frame Rate Videos of the Fiberoptic Endoscopic Evaluation of Swallowing
AbstractThe purpose of this study was to assess whether or not high frame rate (HFR) videos recorded using high-speed digital imaging (HSDI) improve the visual recognition of the motions of the laryngopharyngeal structures during pharyngeal swallow in fiberoptic endoscopic evaluation of swallowing (FEES). Five healthy subjects were asked to swallow 0.5 ml water under fiberoptic nasolaryngoscopy. The endoscope was connected to a high-speed camera, which recorded the laryngopharyngeal view throughout the swallowing process at 4000 frames/s (fps). Each HFR video was then copied and downsampled into a standard frame rate (SFR) video version (30 fps) . Fifteen otorhinolaryngologists observed all of the HFR/SFR videos in random order and rated the four-point ordinal scale reflecting the degree of visual recognition of the rapid laryngopharyngeal structure motions just before the ‘white-out’ phenomenon. Significantly higher scores, reflecting better visibility, were seen for the HFR videos compared with the SFR videos for the following laryngopharyngeal structures: the posterior pharyngeal wall (p = 0.001), left pharyngeal wall (p = 0.015), right lateral pharyngeal wall (p = 0.035), tongue base (p = 0.005), and epiglottis tilting (p = 0.005). However, when visualized with HFR and SFR, ‘certainly clear observation’ of the laryngeal structures was achieved in

About one-third of adults say they don't usually get enough sleep. Now, there's news of a link between quality of sleep and risk of dementia. Dr. Jon LaPook explains the science behind the new report.
A BRISK 10-minute walk each day could save millions of middle-aged Britons from an early death, research has found.
A SIMPLE scan can accurately predict whether someone will suffer a potentially fatal stroke.
CANCER can be prevented with regular physical activity, but millions in the UK are raising their risk of early death by walking at a brisk pace less than ten minutes a month.
STROKE risk could be predicted after experts developed a new and potentially life-saving MRI scan.
The World Health Organization said the leading cause of death is now lower respiratory tract infections. HIV/AIDS killed 760,000 Africans in 2015, and was the top cause since at least 2000.
The move, unveiled in a policy statement on Wednesday, comes amid a broad effort to battle dangerous superbugs which are becoming increasingly resistant to medication.
The phase information of a complex field is routinely obtained using coherent measurement techniques as, e.g., interferometry or holography. The obtained measurement result is subject to a 2 π ambiguity and is often referred to as wrapped phase. Phase-unwrapping algorithms (PUAs) are commonly ...
Inspection of defects with micrometer level on large aperture surfaces with hundreds of millimeters is one of the challenges in surface quality evaluation. Various microscopic imaging methods have been applied to inspecting the surface defects, while they are time-consuming for the small field of ...
