PDT for cholangiocarcinoma

Cholangiocarcinoma (bile duct cancer) is increasing in incidence in the West. Most cases (2/3) are diagnosed in men age 50 –70 with the majority found at surgically unresectable disease stage. The prognosis for most patients, then, is dismal with approximately 3 months’ survival without intervention, and 4–6 months’ survival after palliative biliary decompression. Successful palliation of biliary obstruction rem ains the main goal for reducing morbidity and mortality in these patients [1].
