High intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) : Importance in the treatment of prostate cancer.

DISCUSSION: Due to a lack of prospective randomized trials and limited long-term results, whole gland HIFU is considered differently in the guidelines of European countries. Focal therapy is still experimental and should only be carried out within clinical trials. PMID: 28439616 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

ConclusionsAnalyses according to treatment received showed increased rates of disease-related events and lower rates of patient-reported harms in men managed by AM compared with men managed by radical treatment, and stronger evidence of greater PCa mortality in the AM group.Patient summaryMore than 95 out of every 100 men with low or intermediate risk localised prostate cancer do not die of prostate cancer within 10 yr, irrespective of whether treatment is by means of monitoring, surgery, or radiotherapy. Side effects on sexual and bladder function are better after active monitoring, but the risks of spreading of pros...

Conclusions: Higher dose volumes for the bladder and rectum predicted for poorer PR-QOL. In contrast to prostate brachytherapy data, neither prostate volume nor urethral dosimetry at this dose schedule correlated with urinary symptoms.

AbstractPurpose of ReviewTo describe the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and management of vesicourethral anastomotic stenosis after prostate cancer treatment.Recent FindingsInjectable scar modulating agents administered at the time of direct visual internal urethrotomy of vesicourethral anastomotic stenoses have been shown to improve endoscopic treatment outcomes. Trials are ongoing to find the optimal agent and delivery system. Novel tissue engineering techniques are in development and hold promise.SummaryVesicourethral anastomotic stenosis after the treatment of prostate cancer is a challenging complication for patients and...

CONCLUSIONS: There was no impact of timing between RP and RT on urinary, bowel, and erectile adverse events related to RT. Thus, our RTOG 9601 post hoc analysis challenges the current belief that early postsurgical RT compromises functional outcomes more than late RT and support additional research to evaluate the perceived benefit in terms of adverse effects by prolonging the time between RP and RT. Authors: Huh JS, Kim YJ, Kim SD, Park KK Abstract PURPOSE: To analyze the clinical parameters correlated with early recovery of urinary continence after radical prostatectomy, with a focus on urethral mobility during pelvic contraction at catheter removal. METHODS: We prospectively analyzed 67 patients who underwent prostatectomy for prostate cancer at Jeju National University Hospital from January 2015 to June 2018. At the time of catheter removal, a cystography was performed in 67 men (median age, 65 years; range, 55-76 years) who had undergone robot-assisted laparoscopic prostatectomy. The vertical length of...

Abstract While radiotherapy is widely used in cancer treatment, the benefits can be limited by radiation-induced damage to neighboring healthy tissues. We previously demonstrated that the anti-inflammatory compound dimethylaminoparthenolide (DMAPT) selectively induces radiosensitivity in prostate tumor tissue from transgenic adenocarcinoma of mouse prostate (TRAMP), while simultaneously protecting healthy tissues from 6 Gy whole-body radiation-induced apoptosis. Here, we examined the radioprotective effect of DMAPT on fibrosis in normal tissues after a partial-body fractionated radiation protocol that more closely...

ConclusionsThe modified technique of bladder neck intussusception in laparoscopic radical prostatectomy prolongs the length of functional posterior urethra and is effective to improve postoperative early continence.
