We describe what is currently known about the immunological and neurological basis of this disease, focusing on the interactions between the immune and nervous system. Evidence for immune involvement in IC/BPS comes from its high co-occurrence with known autoimmune diseases, altered cytokine profiles, and immune cell infiltration in patients. These cytokines have the ability to cross-talk with the nervous system via NGF signaling, resulting in hyper-sensitization of pain receptors, causing them to release substance P and creating a positive feedback loop of neuroinflammation. While it seems that the crosstalk between the i...

Authors: Yang X, Wang J, Lin L, Gao D, Yin L Abstract PURPOSE: To assess the complications and clinical outcomes of concurrent chemoradiotherapy (CCRT) or pure radiotherapy (RT) in local advanced cervical carcinoma (LACC) patients. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study was carried out in 113 consecutive LACC (FIGO Stage IB2-IIIB) patients, of whom 68 received CCRT; the others received pure RT. Five-year overall survival (OS) and the incidence, type, and severity of postoperative complications were analyzed. RESULTS: The five-year survival rate for CCRT and pure RT were 67.7% and 46.8%, respectively (...

Authors: Mercuro NJ, Davis SL, Zervos MJ, Herc ES Abstract INTRODUCTION: The role of enterococci in infectious diseases has evolved from a gut and urinary commensal to a major pathogen of concern. Few options exist for resistant enterococci, and appropriate use of the available agents is crucial. Areas covered: Herein, the authors discuss antibiotics with clinically useful activity against Enterococcus faecalis and E. faecium. The article specifically discusses: antibiotics active against enterococci and their mechanism of resistance, pharmacokinetic and pharmacodynamic principles, in vitro combinations, and clinic...

Cholesterol rich membrane invaginations, caveolae, have important roles in various cellular activities, one of them being signal transduction. This signaling pathway seems to be affected during various bladder disorders and the current study aimed to elucidate the plausible involvement of caveolae mediated signal transduction during cyclophosphamide induced cystitis. Furthermore, the urothelial cholinergic part of ATP-evoked contractions and its possible link to caveolae were investigated.Cholinergic, as well as purinergic, contractile responses in rat urinary bladders were examined using a classic organ bath set-up with f...

AbstractPurpose of ReviewThe purpose of this review is to study the epidemiology, presentation, pathogenesis and management of ketamine cystitis and its complications.Recent FindingsRecent data suggest that the toxicity of ketamine can be due to direct cytotoxicity, independent of a NMDA receptor-mediated mechanism. Bladder barrier dysfunction, neurogenic inflammation with abnormal neurotransmission and immunological mechanisms have also been proposed, based on data from animal models and in vitro studies. Effects on the bladder are dependent on the dose and duration of ketamine use. Clinical studies have showed that the m...
