Permissiveness of bovine epithelial cells from lung, intestine, placenta and udder for infection with Coxiella burnetii
AbstractRuminants are the main source of human infections with the obligate intracellular bacteriumCoxiella (C.)burnetii. Infected animals shed high numbers ofC. burnetii by milk, feces, and birth products. In goats, shedding by the latter route coincides withC. burnetii replication in epithelial (trophoblast) cells of the placenta, which led us to hypothesize that epithelial cells are generally implicated in replication and shedding ofC. burnetii. We therefore aimed at analyzing the interactions ofC. burnetii with epithelial cells of the bovine host (1) at the entry site (lung epithelium) which govern host immune responses and (2) in epithelial cells of gut, udder and placenta decisive for the quantity of pathogen excretion. Epithelial cell lines [PS (udder), FKD-R 971 (small intestine), BCEC (maternal placenta), F3 (fetal placenta), BEL-26 (lung)] were inoculated withC. burnetii strains Nine Mile I (NMI) and NMII at different cultivation conditions. The cell lines exhibited different permissiveness forC. burnetii. While maintaining cell viability, udder cells allowed the highest replication rates with formation of large cell-filling Coxiella containing vacuoles. Intestinal cells showed an enhanced susceptibility to invasion but supportedC. burnetii replication only at intermediate levels. DiscussionThe interventions of education and medication alerts resulted in a significant increase in the percentage of patients receiving appropriate doses of dilTIAZem and a nonsignificant decrease in the incidence of hypotension. This process-oriented intervention resulted in an improvement in appropriate dilTIAZem doses at our site. Rate control was not statistically significantly different between the 2 groups. Long-term sustainability of this intervention requires further study.
ConclusionsVitamin D insufficiency was prevalent in both newly diagnosed axSpA patients and healthy controls. There was no association between vitamin D and pain and disease activity in the newly diagnosed axSpA patients. Monitoring vitamin D levels is important and early intervention for vitamin D insufficiency is needed, especially in female patients.
ConclusionVacuum assisted dressing is more effective than traditional wound dressing in wound healing of open fractures.

CONCLUSIONS: Neonatal screening with the red reflex is not sufficient to detect intraocular disease. A normal neonatal red reflex does no exclude intraocular disease. It has a specificity of nearly 90%, but its sensitivity is only 56%. Most retinal haemorrhages are undiagnosed as they cannot be detected with a red reflex.
