Link between Serum Pepsinogen Concentrations and Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Findings.

Link between Serum Pepsinogen Concentrations and Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopic Findings. J Korean Med Sci. 2017 May;32(5):796-802 Authors: Lee SP, Lee SY, Kim JH, Sung IK, Park HS, Shim CS Abstract The serum pepsinogen (PG) assay findings are correlated with the status of Helicobacter pylori infection, but there are controversies on the link with upper gastrointestinal (UGI) endoscopic findings. The aim of this study was to determine the significance of a serum PG assay for correlating with endoscopic findings in H. pylori-seroprevalent adult population. Korean adults who visited for a health check-up were included consecutively. Subjects after gastrectomy or H. pylori eradication were excluded. After completing the serum PG assay and anti-H. pylori immunoglobulin G (IgG) titer on the same day of UGI endoscopy, subjects with equivocal serology test finding or gastric neoplasm were excluded. Of the 4,830 included subjects, 3,116 (64.5%) were seropositive for H. pylori. Seropositive finding was related to high serum PG I (P

Authors: Petcu A, Ghib LJ, Grad SM, Popovici C, Rogojan L, Rednic NV, Rednic S Abstract Gastrointestinal tract involvement is the most common visceral affectation in systemic sclerosis (SSc), but the manifestations may vary in extension and severity. Endoscopic and histopathological gastroesophageal findings were investigated in patients with SSc. A total of 79 consecutive patients with definite SSc were enrolled in a cross sectional study. Clinical data were collected, upper gastrointestinal endoscopy and biopsies from gastric mucosa were performed in all cases. Fifty-seven (72.1%) out of 79 SSc patients had gastr...

Authors: Liu Z, Xie W, Li M, Liu J, Liang X, Li T Abstract Polaprezinc (PZ), a chelate of zinc and L-carnosine, has been widely used in the treatment of gastric ulcers since 1994. In recent years, researchers have found PZ to have a beneficial effect on various experimentally induced models of colitis in mice. In the present study, 6% dextran sodium sulfate (DSS) was used to induce a model of ulcerative colitis (UC) in Institute of Cancer Research mice. The therapeutic effect and mechanism of PZ action in a model of UC was studied in order to provide an experimental basis for the clinical application of PZ in UC tr...

Conclusions: The evidence derived from this network meta-analysis supports the idea that weekend admissions are associated with an increased risk of death, especially among variceal UGIH patients in European hospitals.

Authors: Pessia B, Ciarrocchi A, Marinelli S, Pietroletti R Abstract A young lady complained of the sudden onset of intense chest pain, in consequence of an extreme hyperextension of the back in a yoga position. At endoscopy a large lesion of the esophageal epithelium was detected, involving the middle third of the anterior wall of the esophagus. Other symptoms reported by the patient were dysphagia and odynophagia, depicting the typical features of intramural hematoma, also known as intramural dissection or intramural perforation of the oesophagus. The patient was managed conservatively and symptoms disappeared wi...

CONCLUSIONS: This smartphone application coupled with targeting device can be used in various settings such as EVD placement in hydrocephalus and in other brain targeting candidates in emergency settings. Also, it may be used in any emergency or neurosurgery department centers with no access to advanced neuro-imaging facilities, only using patient's simple cranial measures to achieve acceptable and highly accurate brain targeting compared with conventional, time consuming and costly techniques. We plan to expand this study to clinical trials for further evaluation. PMID: 31802048 [PubMed - in process]
