Background: Eccrine duct dilation (EDD) was recently described to occur more frequently in cicatricial alopecias than noncicatricial alopecias. Because single EDD can be useful in the evaluation of alopecias, we aimed to determine whether dilation of multiple eccrine duct units, or “multiple eccrine duct dilation (MEDD),” could more specifically discriminate between cicatricial and noncicatricial alopecias. Methods: We retrospectively evaluated 611 scalp biopsies (342 cicatricial alopecias and 269 noncicatricial alopecias). Results: Among cicatricial alopecias, MEDD was found in 21% (25/118) of central ...

In conclusion, our data indicate an association between FASLG rs5030772 variation and AA. However, previously reported the association of FAS rs1800682 polymorphism with AA was not observed here. These findings highlight overlapping and distinct genetic polymorphisms in an Iranian cohort which might influence the susceptibility to AA. PMID: 31741398 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

In conclusion, a significant positive association was revealed between AA and SSc. Further studies are necessary to establish these findings in other study populations and to elucidate the mechanism underlying this association. Awareness of SSc may be of importance for physicians trea ting patients with AA, and screening for SSc in patients with relevant symptoms may be considered.

Authors: Gupta AK, Carviel JL Abstract Background: Alopecia areata (AA) is an autoimmune disease that can result in spontaneous hair loss. Currently, there is no US Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved treatment, however new treatments are being investigated. Excimer laser and excimer lamp treatment have been suggested and have the benefit of mild/few adverse effects. Methods: A literature search and meta-analysis was performed to investigate the efficacy of the excimer laser and lamp for treatment of AA. Results: No controlled trials were found which utilized the 308-nm excimer lamp. Four controlled trials (...

Conclusions and Relevance: Overlap in immune signaling pathways between AD and chronic pruritus, eczematous eruption of aging, allergic contact dermatitis, chronic hand eczema, alopecia areata, urticaria, eosinophilic annular erythema, bullous pemphigoid and papuloerythroderma of Ofuji make these conditions candidates for dupilumab therapy when standard treatments have failed or are contraindicated. While promising as a therapeutic option, off-label prescribing of dupilumab requires consideration of challenges in insurance authorization and out-of-pocket cost to the patient. AbstractAlopecia areata is a chronic inflammatory disease that characterized by round or oval patches of non-scarring hair loss. From the past,Urginea maritima (white squill) was used for the treatment of hair loss in Iranian traditional medicine. We aimed the comparison of Clobetasol lotion and squill extract efficacy in treatment of alopecia areata in a randomized, double-blind clinical trial. The 42 patients were randomized into two groups. Both groups received topical squill and clobetasol lotion twice daily lotion for 12 weeks. Clinical evaluation included size of patches (using 1 ×1 cm2 schablone), total number...

AbstractThough hair does not serve any crucial physiological function in modern humans, it plays an important role in our self-esteem. Androgenic baldness (androgenic alopecia) and circular/spot baldness (alopecia areata) are the most common forms of hair loss. Many active ingredients of synthetic origin are available for treatment; however, they have a number of limitations. Their effectiveness and safety are questionable and the amount of time needed to achieve the effect is both long and unclear. This has increased interest in finding an alternative approach against hair loss using preparations containing plants and/or ...
