Therapeutic Endoscopy for the Control of Nonvariceal Upper Gastrointestinal Bleeding in Children: A Case Series

Conclusions: NVUGI bleeding requiring therapeutic endoscopic intervention is rare in pediatrics. A high rate (40%) of rebleeding was noted with a large proportion (66%) of patients receiving single modality therapy. Two patients required surgical intervention to control bleeding and both presented with bleeding duodenal ulcers. An insufficient number of therapeutic procedures is available for adequate fellow training requiring supplemental simulator and hands-on animal model, or adult endoscopy unit training.

Authors: Lowres N, Giskes K, Hespe C, Freedman B Abstract Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a significant risk factor for avoidable stroke. Among high-risk patients with AF, stroke risk can be mitigated using oral anticoagulants (OACs), however reduction is largely contingent on physician prescription and patient persistence with OAC therapy. Over the past decade significant advances have occurred, with revisions to clinical practice guidelines relating to management of stroke risk in AF in several countries, and the introduction of non-vitamin K antagonist OACs (NOACs). This paper summarises the evolving body of researc...

Publication date: Available online 19 September 2019Source: Materials Today: ProceedingsAuthor(s): Mariya Androsenko, Elena Reshetnikova, Nail TyuteryakovAbstractPerformance of secondary cooling zone rollers manufactured by «VAI FUCHS» and installed on the mould have been examined to determine such factors as the influence of the design of the mold foot rollers on the parameters of the billet. Calculations confirming the feasibility of the proposed solution have been made. The values of the bending moments and shear forces of the three-roller assembly are lower and fluctuate within 10%, which, if used, can redu...

We report 3 cases of subcapsular hemorrhage of the spleen in vivax malaria, with varying degrees of severity. Case 1 showed subcapsular hemorrhage without splenic rupture, was treated by antimalarial drug without any procedure. The healing process of the patient's spleen was monitored through 6 computed tomography follow-up examinations, over 118 days. Case 2 presented subcapsular hemorrhage with splenic rupture, treated only with an antimalarial drug. Case 3 showed subcapsular hemorrhage with splenic rupture and hypotension, treated using splenic artery embolization. They all recovered from subcapsular hemorrhage wit...

Conclusions: Endovascular embolization of ACoA aneurysms is an effective and safe treatment method. The most powerful factor influencing the incidence of complications is packing density. Superior orientation of the dome, initial incomplete embolization and poor outcome in mRS scale are factors predisposing to ACoA aneurysm recurrence. PMID: 31534577 [PubMed]

Conclusions: Severe malaria is a highly frequent event in pregnant women, without differences by Plasmodium species. It shows early recognizable dangers signs. Hospital under-reporting was identified in 88% of severe cases as well as a lack of laboratory tests for a more comprehensive diagnosis. A protocol for the clinical diagnosis of pregnant women with malaria is required. PMID: 31529822 [PubMed - in process]

Conclusion: Percutaneous management is a safe and effective third-line method for difficult-management bleedings control in patients with postpartum hemorrhage after a severe perineal tear. These results are similar to case reports published in the worldwide literature available to date. PMID: 31529818 [PubMed - in process]
