Using Off-Label Intravitreous Bevacizumab for Diabetic Macular Edema

To the Editor Based on the results of the Diabetic Retinopathy Clinical Research Network Comparative Effectiveness Trial, Ross and colleagues have conducted a pharmacoeconomic study in which the cost-effectiveness of aflibercept, ranibizumab, and off-label bevacizumab was estimated for patients with diabetic macular edema. Defining the place in therapy for these treatments took into account that off-label bevacizumab costs 31 and 20 times less than aflibercept and ranibizumab, respectively, while differences in efficacy are modest.
