Vertos Medical wins CMS reimbursement for Mild procedure

Vertos Medical said today it won national coverage for its Mild procedure designed to treat lumbar spinal stenosis from the Centers for Medicare &Medicaid Services. The Mild procedure won coverage through a recently approved study as part of CMS’ Coverage with Evidence Development Program, the Aliso Viejo, Calif.-cased company said. Access to the procedure was granted via a CMS-approved claims-analysis study which will passively collect and analyze real-world data on the procedure. “Patient and physician demand for the Mild procedure has grown a great deal, and I’m excited to hear that my patients and fellow practitioners will now have access to this effective, proven method for relieving pain and getting people back to doing the things that make life enjoyable. Patients with lumbar spinal stenosis present with low back pain, numbness and pain in the legs and gait difficulties due to neurogenic claudication. Patients often walk in a stooped posture to increase the spinal canal diameter by stretching out the ligamentum flavum. This stooped posture leads to a positive sagittal balance. After decompressive surgery, patients may walk in a less stooped manner, improving their sagittal balance, which may lead to less back pain and improved patient reported outcomes.

Hello all: I have a few patients like this. Severe lumbar spinal stenosis. No claudication at all. Failed RF. Would you send someone like this for a decompression if they have failed an ESI? Say the axial pain is definitely worse with walking versus if it is not, does that make a difference to you on this issue? Any surgical literature out there regarding decompression outcomes in this patient population? Thanks in advance.
