Available drug may protect ovaries and fertility from damage by chemotherapies

Increasingly patients are seeking the advice of reproductive medicine clinicians and scientists to enable them to preserve their gametes and/or embryos. The reasons are either as a form of reproductive insurance, or more important, to preserve their fertility before undergoing gonadotoxic therapy, most commonly chemotherapy. It is a guideline of the American Society of Clinical Oncology that all health care providers caring for adult and pediatric patients with cancer should address the possibility of infertility as early as possible before treatment starts (1).

CONCLUSIONS: Recent work has identified associations between a number of malignancies and benign urologic conditions including male infertility, Peyronie's disease, cryptorchidism, and hypospadias. Molecular and genetic mechanisms have been proposed, but no definitive causal relationships have been identified to date. Future work will continue to better define the links between malignancy and benign urologic conditions and ultimately facilitate risk stratification, screening, and treatment of affected men.
