Research Space at Academic Institutions Increased 1.4% between FY 2013 and FY 2015: Smallest Growth in Three Decades

Research-performing universities and colleges increased their research space for science and engineering by 1.4% from FY 2013 to FY 2015. This was the lowest 2-year percentage increase since data collection began in 1988. Total research space increased 2.9 million net assignable square feet (NASF) over this period, from 211.8 million to 214.7 million. The rate of increase was substantially below the average 2-year growth rate (4.9%), as measured from FY 1988 to FY 2015. Data are from the biennial Survey of Science and Engineering Research Facilities, conducted by the National Center for Science and Engineering Statistics within the National Science Foundation.
