Primary ureteral leiomyosarcoma in a dog

Case descriptionA nearly 6‐year‐old female spayed Labrador Retriever was presented for acute abdominal pain and lethargy. The dog had no previous health concerns apart from occasional episodes of urinary incontinence in the 2 months prior to presentation. A retroperitoneal mass involving the right ureter was found during the investigations. Serum urea was mildly elevated, but the serum creatinine was within the normal range. No distant metastases were detected. A right ureteronephrectomy was performed. The ureteral mass was confirmed as a leiomyosarcoma and completely excised. The kidney was histologically normal. Unfortunately, during a routine 3‐month postoperative assessment, a recurrent mass at the previous retroperitoneal surgical site was confirmed by biopsy to be a leiomyosarcoma. Courses of doxorubicin and chlorambucil were given, but failed to halt the progression of the recurrent mass. The dog was euthanised 5.5 months postoperatively because of poor quality of life. Clinical relevanceUreteral leiomyosarcoma should be on the differential diagnosis list for a retroperitoneal mass, possibly causing severe abdominal pain with minor clinical signs associated with the urinary tract. This dog in this reported case of ureteral leiomyosarcoma had a short survival time, despite complete surgical excision and chemotherapy, because of local recurrence.

Authors: Togha M, Bahrpeyma F, Jafari M, Nasiri A Abstract BACKGROUND: Cervicogenic headache (CeH) is among the common types of headache which has an undesirable influence on the quality of life. The myofascial trigger point (MTrP) within the sternocleidomastoid (SCM) muscle is one of the most important causes of CeH. OBJECTIVE: The purpose of this study was to compare the effect of dry needling (DN) and ischemic compression (IC) on the headache symptoms as well as MTrP-related features in subjects with CeH originating from MTrPs of the SCM muscle using a sonographic method. METHODS: A total of 29 female su...

Conclusion: Repeated colonoscopies can be perceived as both an assurance of life and a reminder of a lifelong illness. Healthcare professionals need to provide support in terms of awareness of patients' vulnerability, despite extensive experience of the colonoscopy procedure. For example, person-centred care and continuity in care are potential interventions based on the results of this study. Another important aspect of care is to minimise interference in everyday life to prevent feelings of loss of the healthy self, for example by self-administrated outpatient booking systems.Summarize the established knowledge on this s...

We present two cases which are specific for unusual location of Burkitt lymphoma in the colon and stomach, in immunocompetent patients with negative Epstein-Barr virus tests. Also, one of the patients presented is one of the oldest ever reported with abdominal Burkitt lymphoma, while the other patient is an example of diagnostic difficulties in distinguishing Burkitt lymphoma from similar lymphomas. Due to the rapidly growing tumors and urgent need for cytoreductive surgery, it is crucial to consider the diagnosis of Burkitt lymphoma even in atypical localizations or absence of the common risk factors associated with Burki...

Authors: Topolovec Z, Horvat T, Vidosavljević D, Šijanović S, Müller-Vranješ A, Ugljarević M, Milojković D, Topolovec S Abstract The aim of this retrospective study was to present the impact of successful optimal cytoreductive therapy on the overall prognosis of ovarian cancer treatment. Several factors were analyzed, including clinical (stage, age and parity), histopathologic/cytological (histologic type and grade of tumors, cytological findings of ascites or peritoneal washout), and therapeutic (surgery performed with the degree of cytoreduction, adjuvant chemotherapy and response to therap...

POSTOPERATIVE PAIN AND STRESS RESPONSE: DOES CHILD'S GENDER HAVE AN INFLUENCE? Acta Clin Croat. 2019 Jun;58(2):274-280 Authors: Karišik M, Gligorović Barhanović N, Vulović T, Simić D Abstract Surgical procedure causes multisystem stress response reactions. The aim of this study was to assess whether gender has an impact on the level of neuroendocrine response to surgical stress and intensity of postoperative pain in children undergoing inguinal hernia repair surgery, as well as satisfaction of their parents with preoperative and postoperative care. The study included 60 children aged 3-6 yea...

A 48-year-old woman underwent kidney transplantation for end-stage renal disease. Fifteen days after transplantation, the patient presented with strong abdominal and back pain on the right side, and blood examination showed severe anemia. Contrast-enhanced computed tomography and emergent angiography was performed, which showed extravasation from the lumba...
