Local Company Instrumental In First Regenerated Esophagus

BOSTON (CBS) —- A local company is part of a second breakthrough in regeneration of human body parts. A research team led by Paolo Macchiarin at Karolinska Institutet in Sweden has successfully transplanted a regenerated esophagus into a rat. The results were published in Nature Communications on Tuesday. Last year, the same company regenerated a human trachea and transplanted it into a human. HART CEO David Green says the study is promising as it represents advancements toward the translation of tissue engineered esophagi. “The results follow up on the successful regeneration of the trachea,” Green said. So far, 8 patients have had a regenerated trachea transplant.  “This really gives us hope that we can extend the technology from the trachea to the esophagus.” Green says an esophagus transplant into a human could come in two-to-three years. “This is a very promising and exciting step forward,” Green said.
