One-Year Swallowing Outcomes in Patients Treated with Prophylactic Gabapentin During Radiation-Based Treatment for Oropharyngeal Cancer

AbstractRecent investigations by our study team have demonstrated patients using gabapentin for pain management during chemoradiotherapy (CRT) do well maintaining swallowing during treatment with less need for narcotic pain medication, PEG dependence, weight loss, and short-term swallowing morbidity. The purpose of this investigation was to characterize the long-term swallowing function of these patients 1-year following treatment. Sequential patients receiving CRT for oropharyngeal cancer and concurrent gabapentin were evaluated 1-year following treatment for swallowing outcomes. Functional Oral Intake Scores (FOIS) were utilized to assess diet level. The MD Anderson Dysphagia Inventory (MDADI) was chosen to evaluate patient perception of swallowing function. Videofluoroscopic swallowing studies were completed approximately 1 year after treatment to assess physiologic outcomes as well as Penetration Aspiration Scores (PAS). Data from 26 consecutive participants were available for analysis. The majority of patients had advanced stage disease (Stage 3 –4). No patients had a PEG tube 1-year following treatment, and the mean FOIS score was 6.83. Pharyngeal deficits were infrequent with reduced pharyngeal constriction and prominence/early closure of cricopharyngeus predominating. Mean PAS score was 1.5, indicating that the majority of patients had either no laryngeal penetration/aspiration, or transient penetration that was fully cleared. Mean MDADI score was 85.52, indicat...

Authors: Phillips PK, Caldis MW, Hristov AD, Lee AS, Lucey MR Abstract The manufacture and consumption of alcohol are ubiquitous and as old as time. Alcohol use disorder (AUD) is defined as a problematic pattern of alcohol use leading to clinically significant impairment. The physical injuries that result from excessive alcohol consumption are varied including end-organ damage to liver (alcohol-associated liver disease or ALD), pancreas, brain and heart, and systemic consequences including several forms of cancer. Liver transplantation (LT) remains the treatment of last resort for life-threatening liver disease. LT...

Authors: Zhou WW, Chu YP, An GY Abstract OBJECTIVE: Tumor was reported to correlate with inflammation and the host's inflammatory response to tumor has been shown to independently predict the outcome. Many measures of the systemic inflammatory response have been studied in recent years. In the present study the full blood count (leukocyte, neutrophil, lymphocyte) of colorectal cancers (CRCs) adenomatous polyps, and healthy people were collected, and the difference of ratios was studied. PATIENTS AND METHODS: A total of 752 individuals (242 colorectal cancers, 248 adenomatous polyps, and 262 healthy people) were...

Authors: Tian HT, Duan XH, Yang YF, Wang Y, Bai QL, Zhang X Abstract OBJECTIVE: To investigate the effects of propofol and sevoflurane anesthesia on the inflammatory response, pulmonary function and cognitive function of patients undergoing lung cancer resection and their differences. PATIENTS AND METHODS: 62 patients with lung cancer who underwent pulmonary lobectomy from January 2014 to January 2016 in Jining First People's Hospital were selected and randomly divided into two groups: the propofol group (n=31) and the sevoflurane group (n=31). Patients in the propofol group were treated with intravenous inject...

MATERIALS AND METHODS: The expression level of ZNF667-AS1 from two microarray datasets (GSE63514 and GSE6791) and TCGA (The Cancer Genome Atlas) were selected to analyze the difference between cervical cancer tissues and normal cervical tissues with bioinformatics methods. Then, the prognosis of ZNF667-AS1 was calculated in TCGA. The expression of LncR...
