Hoarding: Is it OCD?

Hoarding was previously considered a type of OCD; it is listed among others as an OCD Spectrum Disorder. The DMS-V now lists Hoarding Disorder as a separate disorder, classified as Obsessive Compulsive and Related Disorders along with OCD, OCPD, Trichotillomania, Excoriation and Body Dysmorphic Disorder. While OCD and Hoarding Disorder share some similarities, there are differences in the causes according to brain scans, and the type of treatment. Traditional ERP therapy that works so well for OCD is not usually effective for hoarding behavior. The medications that generally work for OCD often do not work for hoarding behavior.
