Researchers identify'synthetic essentiality' as novel approach for locating cancer therapy targets

A new method has been found for identifying therapeutic targets in cancers lacking specific key tumor suppressor genes. The process, which located a genetic site for the most common form of prostate cancer, has potential for developing precision therapy for other cancers, such as breast, brain and colorectal, say researchers.

In this study, we show that MeCP2 may play a critical role in the suppression of glioma progression. Stable overexpression of MeCP2in C6 glioma cells inhibits proliferation, migration, invasion, and adhesion. Moreover, MeCP2 overexpression inhibits pERKand BDNF expression while inducing GFAP expression in C6 glioma. A multiphase, approximate biological effective dose (BEDA) equation was introduced because most treatment planning systems (TPS) are incapable of calculating the true BED (BEDT). This work investigates the accuracy and precision of the multiphase BEDA relative to the BEDT in clinical cases. Ten patients with head and neck cancer and 10 patients with prostate cancer were studied using their treatment plans from Pinnacle3 9.2 (Philips Medical, Fitchburg, WI). The organs at risk (OARs) that were studied are the normal brain, left and right optic nerves, optic chiasm, spinal cord, brainstem, bladder, and rectum.

We reviewed available evidence on coffee drinking and the risk of all cancers and selected cancers updated to May 2016. Coffee consumption is not associated with overall cancer risk. A meta-analysis reported a pooled relative risk (RR) for an increment of 1 cup of coffee/day of 1.00 [95% confidence interval (CI): 0.99–1.01] for all cancers. Coffee drinking is associated with a reduced risk of liver cancer. Conclusion: PSMA avid sites of disease detected on PET/CT in patients with prostate cancer followed the distribution of prostate cancer previously described in autopsy studies, and with similar detection rates. 68Ga-PSMA PET/CT is therefore an accurate noninvasive tool that should be included in recommendations of society guidelines in addition to abdomino-pelvic CT/MR and bone scintigraphy to evaluate the extent of disease in patients with prostate cancer. More people die of lung cancer each year than breast, colon, and prostate cancers combined. One particularly lethal form of the disease is lung adenocarcinoma or LUAD, which afflicts both smokers and non-smokers. In many patients diagnosed with LUAD, tumors cells have already spread to the brain, leading to decreased quality of life and low survival rates. A Yale team of researchers conducted a study to determine how those tumor cells manage to grow outside the lungs.
