Consumption of alcohol during pregnancy-A multinational European study.

CONCLUSIONS: Almost 16% of women resident in Europe consumed alcohol during pregnancy with large cross-country variations. Education and smoking prior to pregnancy could not fully explain the differences between the European countries. A united European strategy to prevent alcohol consumption during pregnancy is needed with focus on countries with the highest consumption. PMID: 28111037 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]

Gestational diabetes mellitus (GDM) is a common pregnancy complication. Its etiology remains incompletely understood. Studies in recent years suggest that fetal sex may affect maternal metabolic milieu during pregnancy. We sought to assess whether there is fetal sex dimorphism in the risk factors of GDM. In a prospective pregnancy cohort in Shanghai, China, we studied 2,435 singleton pregnant women without pre-existing diabetes. GDM was diagnosed according to the International Association of Diabetes and Pregnancy Study Groups (IADPSG)' criteria. Log-binomial models were applied to obtain the adjusted relative risk (aRR). ...

By SAURABH JHA, MD Slumdog TB No one knows who gave Rahul Roy tuberculosis. Roy’s charmed life as a successful trader involved traveling in his Mercedes C class between his apartment on the plush Nepean Sea Road in South Mumbai and offices in Bombay Stock Exchange. He cared little for Mumbai’s weather. He seldom rolled down his car windows – his ambient atmosphere, optimized for his comfort, rarely changed. Historically TB, or “consumption” as it was known, was a Bohemian malady; the chronic suffering produced a rhapsody which produced fine art. TB was fashionable in Victorian Britain...

CONCLUSION: It was feasible to recruit and retain women with BMIs≥25kg/m2 to an intervention to support postnatal weight management; identification of excessive gestational weight gain requires consideration. Economic modelling could inform out-of-trial costs and benefits in a future trial. PMID: 31808248 [PubMed - as supplied by publisher]
