ATF3 expression in cardiomyocytes preserves homeostasis in the heart and controls peripheral glucose tolerance

Conclusions Cardiac ATF3 has a protective role in dampening the HFD-induced cardiac remodeling processes. ATF3 exerts both local and systemic effects related to T2D-induced cardiomyopathy. This study provides a strong relationship between heart remodeling processes and blood glucose homeostasis.

In this study, obesity in rat was developed by high-fat diet (HFD) feeding for 16 weeks. After that, the HFD-fed rats were received either a vehicle (HF), atorvastatin (HFA) or vildagliptin (HFVIL), by oral gavage for 4 weeks. We found that HF rats showed insulin resistance, visceral fat expansion and renal lipid accumulation. Impaired renal function and renal organic anion transporter 3 (Oat3) function and expression were also observed in HF rats. The objective of the current phenomenological study was to describe how diabetes-related distress might be uniquely experienced by older adults (age ≥65) with type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). Interpretive phenomenology guided the research design and analysis. Everyday life experiences of living with T2DM and elevated diabetes distress were investigated with interpretive interviews.
