Boston-based Ginkgo snaps up George Church-founded DNA maker

Ginkgo Bioworks, a fast-growing South Boston company that makes microbes used in a wide range of industries, said Friday that it had acquired Cambridge gene synthesis company Gen9 for an undisclosed sum. Ginkgo, which has around 130 employees, will add nine of Gen9's 11 employees through the deal. In recent years, Ginkgo has been the largest customer of Gen9, a company founded in 2009 by legendary Harvard geneticist George Church to make cost-effective, high-quality DNA.
