Culturally Competent Strategies for Increasing Knowledge of Live Kidney Donation in the Hispanic Community

AbstractPurpose of ReviewDespite a greater prevalence of end-stage renal disease than in non-Hispanic whites, Hispanics/Latinos receive disproportionately fewer kidney transplants, particularly living donor kidney transplants. Because a lack of knowledge and cultural beliefs contribute to Hispanics ’ low living donation rates, it is critical to understand how culturally competent interventions may increase knowledge of living kidney donation and live donor transplantation in the Hispanic population.Recent FindingsOnly three interventions have been culturally targeted to Hispanic persons, including a mass media campaign, exposure to a bilingual website, and exposure to a culturally competent kidney transplant program. All interventions were found effective in increasing Hispanic transplant candidate ’s or the public’s knowledge about living donation.SummaryAs Hispanics/Latinos are the largest and fastest growing minority group, more interventions are urgently needed to mitigate disparities in living kidney donation. Future research should identify culturally targeted priorities for interventions in the Hispanic community.
