A “Visitor in the Class”: Marginalization of Students Using AAC in Mainstream Education Classes
This study explored the views of social life among students using AAC in the Norwegian mainstream, public school. Semi-structure interviews were conducted with 7 students using AAC in first to fourth grade, 10 fellow students, 6 parents, and 18 staff. Using a constructivist grounded theory approach, three organizational and structural premises for friendship between students using AAC and fellow students were identified. Students using AAC had different and weaker extrinsic premises for developing friendship compared with fellow students in class, and results revealed that they had a visiting role towards students in the mainstream class. The schools ’ educational practice violated both national and international perspectives on inclusion.
Conclusion: The patient number is not large enough to make a broad conclusion. However, the individualized treatments and long follow-ups, together with detailed literature review, suggest that CSM requires individualized staged treatments based on each patient's condition. ConclusionsStudies have focused predominantly on assessing transcription or translation/text generation skills with little systematic attention to relationships between writing and language domain or mediational systems skills. Reviewed studies offer preliminary findings, areas of needed future research, and implications for continued research into understanding and supporting the writing skill development of children with ASD.
In the 1990s patients with psoriasis were suffering with few options. To complement their treatment, we started a psoriasis support group, engaging a psychologist, Dr Stephen Rapp, to support our efforts. Dr Rapp was intrigued by the enormous impact that he saw psoriasis having on our patients. Together, we embarked on a quantitative study of that impact. Dr Rapp brought to this project his expertise in formal quality of life assessment; at the time, such patient-reported outcomes were just beginning to be used in dermatology.

Conclusion: Our results demonstrated that a significant percentage of patients affected by both mood disorders and schizophrenia shows relevant social dysfunction. Social dysfunction is related, but not completely explained by psychopathological severity. In several patients, it tends to persist also during remission state. Socio-demographic and lifestyle factors were also found to play a role and should therefore be taken into consideration in further studies investigating social dysfunction.
