AbstractPurpose of ReviewCholestatic liver disease, including primary biliary cholangitis and primary sclerosing cholangitis, can be associated with numerous extrahepatic complications. Of these, malnutrition can negatively impact quality of life in these patients. Achieving nutritional optimization in patients with cholestatic liver disease is an essential component in the overall management of the disease.Recent FindingsThrough various mechanisms, including abnormalities in bile acid metabolism, malabsorption, anorexia, and increased metabolic rate, chronic malnutrition in cholestatic liver disease can lead to vitamin, m...

CONCLUSIONS This study suggested that CS has multiple ingredients and multiple targets relevant to the treatment of osteoporosis. We determined that the active ingredient, sesamin, may be the most crucial ingredient of CS for the treatment of osteoporosis. Additionally, the network pharmacology method provided a novel research approach to analyze the function of complex ingredients. PMID: 32081843 [PubMed - in process]

BACKGROUND&AIMS: Some previous evidence have linked dairy products with greater muscle mass, bone mineral density and lower risk of osteoporosis. However, there is also evidence of a detrimental effect of milk on the risk of hip fracture. The aim of this...

ConclusionVF was seen in more than two-thirds of the postmenopausal women referred for osteoporosis evaluation. VFA identified additional patients with VF whose BMD was not in the osteoporotic range. Incorporation of VFA to BMD will assist in documenting prevalent vertebral fracture which is an independent risk factor for incident fragility fracture irrespective of the BMD.

AbstractSummaryBone formation markers bone-specific alkaline phosphatase and osteocalcin are used in many clinical situations. Therefore, we calculated reference intervals for the two markers and investigated how they are influenced by several factors including sex and age. Furthermore, we established clinically relevant reference intervals for the two markers.ObjectiveThe bone turnover markers (BTMs), bone-specific alkaline phosphatase (bone ALP), and osteocalcin (OC), are frequently measured formation markers. The purpose of this study was to establish reference intervals (RIs) for the two BTMs in a general adult Danish ...

ConclusionsIn Norway, the hip fracture incidence was lower in the north compared with the south. In addition, we observed an east-west gradient with the highest incidence in the southeast and lower incidence in the coastal southwest. While there has been an overall declining trend in hip fracture incidence over time, regional differences are still apparent.

Authors: Aresta C, Passeri E, Corbetta S Abstract Current primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT) clinical presentation is asymptomatic in more than 90% of patients, while symptoms concern osteoporosis and rarely kidney stones. Here, we retrospectively investigated the prevalence of PHPT patients presenting with hypercalcemic-related symptoms (HS-PHPT) as cognitive impairment, changes in sensorium, proximal muscle weakness, nausea and vomiting, constipation, and severe dehydration, in a single center equipped with an emergency department and described their clinical features and outcome in comparison with a series of as...

This study is based on the German Disease Analyzer database and included 4258 adult individuals with a T1DM diagnosis documented between January 2000 and December 2015 in 1203 general practices in Germany. Individual matching of T1DM and non-diabetic patients was performed. The cumulative incidence of new fractures was shown for up to 10  years after the index date using Kaplan-Meier curves. Cox proportional hazard models (dependent variable: incident fracture) were used to estimate the effect of T1DM on fracture incidence, as well as the effect of predefined variables on fracture incidence.ResultsAfter 10  years...

ConclusionsIn postmenopausal osteoporosis, there was no apparent discrepancy between guideline recommendations and drug prescribing rankings, with the exception of vDCa, when we used cumulative NMAs as references.
