Role of Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) and its receptor S1P3 in the reverse cholesterol transport

Sphingosine 1-phosphate (S1P) exerts multiple functions in the cardiovascular system with potential impact on atheroprotection. However, molecular mechanisms accounting for this effect are still under-investigated. The aim of the present study is to demonstrate that the antiatherogenic activity of S1P is associated, at least in part, to the modulation of lipid metabolism. Core tool of this work is the mouse model modified to amplify S1P signaling over the receptor S1P3 in macrophages (S1P3-Lyz mice).
