Building Resilience in High Stress Cohorts with Mindfulness Training

The National Center for Complementary and Alternative Medicine (NCCAM) presents the Integrative Medicine Research Lecture series. The series provides overviews of the current state of research and practice involving complementary health therapies, and explores perspectives on the emerging discipline of integrative medicine. Amishi Jha, Ph.D., is an Associate Professor of Psychology and the Director of Contemplative Neuroscience for the Mindfulness Research & Practice Initiative at the University of Miami. Dr. Jha’s research focuses on the brain bases of attention, working memory, and mindfulness-based training. Her current projects focus on investigating how to promote resilience in high stress cohorts using contemplative and mind training techniques that strengthen the brain’s attention networks. In this lecture, Dr. Jha will talk about her lab’s recent efforts to offer contemplative training (involving mindfulness and compassion) to high stress cohorts including military service members and spouses. She will also discuss her research results, as well as how to address and evaluate best practices for implementation of short-form, accessible forms of mindfulness training.
