The levels of bone turnover markers 25(OH)D and PTH and their relationship with bone mineral density in postmenopausal women in a suburban district in China

This study evaluated the levels of bone turnover markers (BTMs) and investigated relationships between them and bone mineral density (BMD) in postmenopausal women in China suburban district. ConclusionVF was seen in more than two-thirds of the postmenopausal women referred for osteoporosis evaluation. VFA identified additional patients with VF whose BMD was not in the osteoporotic range. Incorporation of VFA to BMD will assist in documenting prevalent vertebral fracture which is an independent risk factor for incident fragility fracture irrespective of the BMD.

Osteoporosis is a silent disease characterized by a low bone mineral density (BMD), which is associated with a deterioration of bone microarchitecture. Accordingly, patients with osteoporosis have a higher fracture risk compared to the general population (1). The diagnosis of osteoporosis is usually established using a bone density scan (DEXA). The world health organization (WHO) defines osteoporosis as a - 2.5 standard deviation compared to the mean of a healthy young population (1,2). BMD varies with age and gender, as well as with life habits such as physical activity (3,4) and nutrition (5).

ConclusionIn this study, we explored various machine learning algorithms for the prediction of BMD using simple spine X-ray image features extracted by three deep learning algorithms. We identified the combination for the best performance in predicting high-risk populations with abnormal BMD.
